Most owner-operators buy their truck before they buy their trailer. They run for a year on broker loads, pulling whatever shows up — sometimes a dry van, sometimes a reefer, sometimes a flat. Then they reach the point where pulling someone else’s trailer is costing them money, and the question becomes which trailer to buy.
The answer depends on what you want your business to look like in five years. Here is an honest breakdown of the four most common trailer types in the BC market, the freight they pull, and the trade-offs each one carries.
Dry van
The dry van is the default. A 53-foot dry van is the most produced trailer type in North America, the easiest to insure, the easiest to sell when you upgrade, and the easiest to find loads for. Freight is general — consumer goods, packaged food, paper, building materials, automotive parts.
What you give up: lower rates per mile than specialized equipment. Dry van is the most competitive freight segment. You are competing against every fleet that bought their first trailer last week.
What you get: stability. Dry van demand exists in every economy, every season, every region. If you pull a dry van out of Surrey, you will find loads — to Calgary, to Edmonton, to Seattle, to Spokane. The capital cost is the lowest of the four trailer types. A clean used 2020-2023 dry van runs in the $25,000 to $40,000 CAD range.
Dry van is the right answer for a new owner-operator who wants predictable cash flow and is still figuring out their lane preferences.
Reefer (refrigerated trailer)
Reefers move temperature-sensitive freight — produce, dairy, frozen goods, pharmaceuticals. In BC, the reefer market is strong year-round because of the Fraser Valley produce belt, the lower mainland food processors, and the steady flow of Washington and California produce coming north.
What you give up: higher capital cost (a clean used reefer runs $55,000 to $90,000), higher operating cost (the reefer unit burns its own diesel), and more maintenance (the refrigeration unit needs service every 1,500 to 2,000 hours of run time). Higher insurance premiums. Cleanliness standards on the trailer are stricter — you cannot haul mixed freight in a reefer that just ran chicken.
What you get: better rates. Reefer freight pays 15 to 25 percent more per mile than dry van. Demand is more consistent through economic downturns because food has to move. The skill premium is real — drivers who run reefers know how to manage temperature, plan their stops, and document continuous temperature integrity. That makes them harder to replace, which protects rate.
Reefer is the right answer for an owner-operator with reefer experience, capital for the higher purchase, and the discipline to maintain the unit properly.
Flatbed
Flatbed trailers move building materials, steel, equipment, and dimensional freight. In BC, the flatbed market is tied to construction, oil and gas, mining, and the lumber industry. Demand is seasonal — busy from April through October, softer through the winter.
What you give up: load-securement skill is non-negotiable. Straps, chains, edge protectors, tarps — flatbed work is physical work. Weather affects you in ways it never does in a dry van. The driver gets out of the truck more, in worse conditions, more often. Insurance underwriters charge more for flatbed work because the claim frequency is higher.
What you get: rates that are 20 to 35 percent above dry van for comparable lanes. Loads that other carriers can’t pull, which protects rate. A 48-foot or 53-foot flatbed runs $30,000 to $55,000 CAD used.
Flatbed is the right answer for an owner-operator who came up in construction or oilfield work and is comfortable with the physical demands.
Step deck
Step deck (also called drop deck) trailers handle freight that is too tall for a flatbed — equipment, machinery, oversized loads. The lower deck height accommodates loads up to 10 or 11 feet of cargo height without permitting issues.
What you give up: most of the same physical demands as flatbed, plus a more specialized rental and resale market. Slightly higher purchase cost than a flatbed.
What you get: access to freight that flatbeds can’t legally pull. Lower competition. In BC, step decks are in demand for equipment hauling out of the Lower Mainland to the Interior, oilfield work into northern Alberta, and machinery freight tied to mining and forestry. Rates can be 30 to 50 percent above dry van for specialized loads.
Step deck is the right answer for an owner-operator who wants to specialize, has a customer base in equipment hauling, and is willing to invest in the gear and the skill set.
The questions to actually ask yourself
Forget what the freight boards look like this week. Ask yourself:
What freight do I actually want to be pulling in five years? Which trailer type matches the customers I want? What is the maintenance and insurance picture I can sustain? What is my capital position for the purchase? Where do I have a skill or relationship advantage that other carriers don’t?
A trailer is a five-to-ten-year capital decision. The wrong one costs you for a long time. The right one becomes the foundation of a business that grows.
