The first truck most owner-operators ever buy gets bought on year, make, mileage, and price. By the second truck, they have learned that those four numbers tell you almost nothing about whether the unit will earn money for you over the next five years. The spec sheet does — but only if you know how to read it.

Here is what actually matters once you get past the first four lines.

Engine and horsepower

Year, make, and engine family are the start, not the end. A 2022 Freightliner Cascadia with a Detroit DD15 is a very different truck depending on which DD15 tune is in it. Look for the rated horsepower and the rated torque, not just the model number. A 455-horsepower truck with 1,750 foot-pounds of torque is built for a different application than a 505-horsepower truck with 1,850 foot-pounds. The first one pulls flatbed and dry van work well at typical highway weights. The second one earns its keep hauling heavy across the Coquihalla.

If you can, ask the seller for the truck’s ECM report. It tells you average fuel economy over the life of the truck, average idle time, and how often it has been driven in the upper RPM bands. A truck that has been worked hard at high RPM lives a shorter life than one that has been cruise-controlled in top gear.

Transmission

Automated manual transmissions — Detroit DT12, Eaton Endurant, Volvo I-Shift, Mack mDrive — now dominate the new and late-model used market for good reason. They get better fuel economy, they reduce driver fatigue, and they hold resale value. A 13-speed or 18-speed manual is still respected for vocational work, heavy haul, and operators who came up driving sticks, but for general highway work in 2026, the AMT is the standard.

What you want to verify on a used AMT: software is up to date, no active fault codes, clutch replacement history if the unit is over 800,000 km. The clutch in an AMT is wear-and-tear, just like a manual, and replacement runs $4,000 to $7,000.

Axle ratio

This is the line most owner-operators don’t think about and most regret. The rear axle ratio determines how the engine RPM relates to road speed. A 2.47 ratio is built for fuel economy at highway speeds with light to medium loads. A 3.55 ratio is built for pulling — heavy loads, hills, frequent stops. A 3.91 or 4.10 is vocational, for dump trucks, mixers, and on-off-road applications.

If you bought a sleeper with 4.10 gears to run dry van across Highway 1, you are burning ten percent more fuel than you need to. If you bought a 2.47 to run heavy haul into the Kootenays, you are working the engine too hard. Match the gearing to the work.

Wheelbase

Wheelbase affects fifth wheel placement, turning radius, and trailer compatibility. A 220-inch wheelbase is a long sleeper truck — comfortable, fuel-efficient on the highway, painful in a tight yard. A 195-inch wheelbase is more versatile in urban work and yard switching. A day cab can run as short as 175 inches. Make sure the wheelbase suits the work you actually do, not the work you imagined doing when you bought it.

Sleeper configuration

If you’re an OTR operator, the sleeper is your house. Look at bunk dimensions, headroom, storage, refrigerator capacity, climate control, and inverter wattage. A 72-inch sleeper is a working bedroom. A 60-inch is a place to nap between runs. An aero package on the sleeper saves fuel; check the side fairings and the roof fairing height match your typical trailer height.

For regional carriers, a day cab spec is often more profitable. Less weight, more payload, lower purchase price, easier resale.

Fuel tank capacity

Combined fuel capacity matters for cross-border runs and long Coquihalla pulls. 150-gallon tanks (US) let you skip a fuel stop on most BC-to-Alberta runs. 100-gallon tanks force a planned stop. The $1,500 to $3,000 difference in dual-tank configuration pays back quickly in time and route flexibility.

Suspension

Air ride is standard on sleepers now. On day cabs and vocational trucks, you may still see spring rear suspension or walking beam configurations. Air ride is the right call for general freight. Spring suspension can be the right call for dump truck and aggregate work, where you’ll appreciate the durability over the ride quality.

Tires and rims

Look at the date code on the tires, not just the tread depth. Tires older than six years are reaching the end of their safe service life regardless of how much rubber is left. Aluminum rims are lighter and look better than steel. Make sure the wheel torque check stickers are current.

What the spec sheet doesn’t tell you

The maintenance history, the accident history, and the previous owner’s habits matter as much as anything on paper. Ask for service records. Ask why the truck is being sold. Look at the inside of the cab — a clean dash, clean upholstery, and an organized sleeper usually mean a clean operator. A truck full of fast food wrappers and cracked dash trim usually means an operator who didn’t take care of much else either.
